We all know someone like that: not quite nuts, neither immoral nor saintly, but absolutely memorable. “A real character!” we might say. But what is it about that person that makes you stop and think, shake your head, and perhaps give a helpless laugh? We’d like to hear about the characters in your life, real or fictional.
Or is there a cartoon character, a marketing or sports mascot, or icon whose back story you’d like to explore? We do welcome fanfic, although it needs to be original.
And remember: The Apostrophe is the child of the Hong Kong Writers Circle, and in this part of the world when we say “character” we might be speaking of written characters. We’d love to read some more non-fiction about this topic. When is a word a character – and when isn’t it? What character is uniquely meaningful to you, and why?
If you have another interpretation of this theme, or if you just have this great piece (Poetry in rhyming stanzas? Free verse? Hybrid?) that you want to share, even if it has nothing to do with the theme, send it along anyway.
After all: submitting to literary magazines builds character.
The theme for issue #8 is CHARACTER. Submissions open January 1-31, 2025. Issue #8 will be published starting on March 1, 2024. Visit our submissions page for more details.
